Review of You Can't Take It with You (1938) by Elliott F — 05 Aug 2010
It's an utterly charming comedy, and it reeks of Capra (though that's not necessarily a bad thing). The cast is very good all around (in particular the luminous Jean Arthur and the great Lionel Barrymore) and the writing is very intelligent.
In my case, I may have spoiled myself for this movie, since I watched Capra's far more endearing Best Picture (1934's It Happened One Night) just days before I watched this one. And it should be noted that those expecting something just as great as It Happened One Night will be slightly disappointed.
So, while it would be a stretch to call it a "great comedy", You Can't Take It With You is still a very good film.
