Review of You Are the Apple of My Eye (2011) by Movie K — 14 Nov 2011

Surprisingly a very good movie. First movie I watch with my girlfriend. Although the settings is in Taiwan, I can relate to the story well. Rather heart-warming. Ke Zhengdong is a quite a rebel boy in high school.

Michelle Chen is a beautiful and smart girl. Ke and 4 other pals (Fatty, Boner, Groin, Handsome baller) all like her as well. Story goes on the usual attics. Ke and Boner are masturbating in class and the teacher want Ke to stand up and recite a paragraph.

Both are punish and Michelle is to take charge of Ke. She keeps him in check and prepare a test paper for him to study. She tells him she don't like lazy people who didn't work hard and blame on the hard working people.

So he put in more effort to study at home and doing her test papers. He bet with her he will score better for the coming exam. If he win, she must tie ponytail everyday. They always study together after school and become even closer.

He lose the bet and shave his hair short. But next day onwards, she tie ponytail and he has no idea why. The class fund was stolen. Discipline master want everyone to write down who they suspect is the thief.

Handsome stood up and refute the idea as insult. Ke stood up next. Even Michelle speak up. Then the whole class unite against the idea. Michelle and the boys are punish and she cry. They console her by saying she is so cool.

They graduated and everyone go to different university. Ke is still sort of wooing Michelle, that kind of stage. He call her every night to chat. He decide to impress her, he must show his best attributes which is fighting.

He hold a competition and Michelle think he is childish. They had a fight and he says he is stupid to woo her for such a long time. That's the breaking point of their so call relationship. They didn't contact.

The other guys heard the news, Fatty and Handsome jump on the chance. Fatty took the train and arrive first. He takes the courage to hold her hand and started dating. They dated for 5 months and Michelle initiate the break.

About 2 years passed, one day a big earthquake happen in Taipei where Michelle is studying. Ke call her cell and got her. They chat about the good old times. Forward to present day, the beginning of the movie whereby the guys tell Ke don't be late for the big day.

It is the wedding day of Michelle. The groom isn't Ke. The old friends all gather at the wedding. Michelle ever so beautiful enter the hall. The guys tell the groom they want to kiss the bride. The groom says although she is ok but then they have to kiss him the same way as to her.

In a flash, Ke kiss the groom to everyone surprise. Then flashback recap their wonderful memories. Very pity the both of them didn't end up together. Because of the guy childish thinking. There is a mention in the movie that same age gender is hard to connect as the girl mature faster.

I will say sometimes people appear at the wrong time of their life.
