Review of You Are the Apple of My Eye (2011) by Daijobu D — 04 Nov 2011
LOVE LETTER (1994) + AMERICAN PIE plot points + manga gags, Giddens Ko's highly praised film about coming-of-age romance and unrequited love doesn't do justice to the inspirations it lifted from. The saving grace is the ending, which works like movie magic NOT by any means of innovative writing - but tucks at our hearts with formulaic cliches that effectively deliver a sucker punch to audience who otherwise would be ready to get up and start hurling expletives at the screen. If college dorm life is just about group circle-jerks and lounging in front of your family and friends in the buff, I'm glad I didn't go to that school.
For audience who grew up during the 90's in Taiwan, the nostalgia and adolescence sentiments overshadow the flaws. For those of us who don't have that same home-grown connection, as much as most of the film disappoints, I repeat myself - the ending does work.
