Review of Yojimbo (1961) by Ryanheart — 02 Jan 2009
Awesome. Everything about this movie is sheer excellence. The story is fairly simple, but interesting and quick-moving. The cinematography is noticeably good. The music is crazy and catchy. Mifune's character, who served as the inspiration for Clint Eastwood's character from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, is a complete and utter badass with awesome sword skills.
The side characters are colorful. The movie is supposed to deconstruct samurai story conventions, and I guess it does, but it's still a great story. Kurosawa was consciously influenced by American Westerns, and so the movie's town has a wide main street complete with billowing dust and people looking fearfully out of windows.
A serious classic that is also hugely enjoyable.
