Review of Yojimbo (1961) by Natalie Z — 06 Apr 2008
Through the whole movie I kept thinking 'Huh, this is an awful lot like a western.' When it was explained to me that this movie was the basis for A Fistful of Dollars everything made a lot more sense.
It's not Kurosawa's greatest film but considering just how great his greatest films are that isn't much of a put down. A lot of the characters are quite hilarious and strange, and it was very entertaining to see what I had thought of as the 'western formula' played out in a samurai film.
