Review of Yojimbo (1961) by Rajneel S — 23 May 2008
Rambling, but highly amusing, whimsical and yet brutally violent adaptation of Dashiel Hammett's book hard-boiled pulp novel "Red Harvest" set in Meiji-era Japan. Tashiro Mifune is a triumph as the grim and yet mirth-filled samurai who uses his wits and cunning to turn two organized crime families against each other.
Kurosawa's cinematography and attention to character detail is notable and awe-inspiring. Would have been great to see it during its initial release. Was remade as "A Fistful of Dollars" by Sergio Leone and Hammett's novel was re-adapted into a dozen other films including "Last Man Standing".
This is, however, the classic rendering of the story and in its most interesting setting.
