Review of Yojimbo (1961) by Tony P — 22 Mar 2009
Upon engaging in my first Kurosawa film, I expected something lengthy and contemplative. Instead, I got an action/western. But no complaints here, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing cinematic genius spent on sheer entertainment.
The way Kurosawa uses depth of field is tremendous. The violence was subtle and shocking in a way I've never seen, choreographed as if upon a stage. I enjoyed watching The Samurai's brain work, employing both sides against one another.
The plot was not complicated, but at times the film was difficult to follow, which somewhat detracted from my enjoyment of it. I admire the contrast between the film's comedic dabbling and its darker examinations.
Very well made.
