Review of Yojimbo (1961) by Amakiri B — 18 Jul 2009
Firstly - This is a great movie but I do not think it is objectively a better film than A Fistful Of Dollars. I loved Mifune's interpretation of the lone warrior and thought it was a stronger and more emotive performance than Clint Eastwood's man with no name. However, the antagonists in this film all seemed to merge into one and I never believed their desperation in securing Mifune's services.
Secondly - The exposition at the end of this movie (which seems to be inherent in many Japanese screenplays) takes the edge off of the film a little.
I really enjoyed Yojimbo but Sergio Leone definately brought a sense of cinematic flourish and polish to this story that Kurosawa did not manage to.
