Less epic than Seven Samauri, which provides a great look at Toshiro Mifune's acting chops. If you want to understand more about movies and their ability to truly show the human condition while driving massive themes down the same path, watch Yojimbo.
I would suggest reading up a little on the time and culture of Japan if you want to get all the different levels.
