Review of Yojimbo (1961) by Joel S — 30 Aug 2009
The precursor to about a million really awesome movies I (and everyone else in the western world) grew up watching, "Yojimbo" is more than the sum of its parts.
Taking at face value, it's a neat little film about a masterless samurai trying to carve out a living for himself and getting caught (and doing some catching on his own) in the middle of a gang war. But you can't talk about "Yojimbo" without discussing its importance to the American (and Italian) Western Genre (if you're counting Bruce Willis' "Last Man Standing" the Crime Genre as well).
Seen by itself, it's a great film put together by a master. Seen in context of what came after it, it's a masterpiece and one of the foundations of modern cinema.
