Review of Yojimbo (1961) by Alexey F — 19 Sep 2009
This is a version of Dashiell Hammett's _Red Harvest_ - the granddaddy of all "modern" versions. (_Fistful of Dollars_ with Clint Eastwood is another version.) Toshiro Mifune gives a great performance as "The Man with No Name" (his character makes up a name that evidently translates into English as "Mulberry Fields - Aged 30" when pressed for a name), a ronin who enters a town torn apart by rival gangs, and sets about an elaborate scheme to free the townspeople from the gangsters.
The way he plans to get the pistol away from the lone gun-toting character in the climactic scene will leave you wondering why you didn't guess his plan, as there is ample (and stylistic) foreshadowing! A must-see for those who like to see the anti-hero with a heart of gold triumph in the end.
