Review of Yojimbo (1961) by Max J — 11 May 2010
What can I say about this movie or Kurosawa that hasn't already been said. Yeah, it's old and it's foreign and it's about a samurai and blah blah blah. But this didn't get remade as "A Fistful of Dollars" because it was a bad movie.
It hasn't been referenced subtly in a thousand other movies because it was bad. Sanjuro (Toshiro Mifune) hasn't become THE archetype of the samurai because he was boring or did a bad job. There is nothing bad about this movie.
Not one wasted shot, not one throw-away line of dialogue, not anything. If you consider yourself a movie fan, then you MUST see this. A classic in the true sense of the word. Movies don't get much better than Yojimbo.
