Review of Yoga Hosers (2016) by Brian S — 30 Dec 2016
For all intents and purposes, Kevin Smith's 2016 tween-centric Yoga Hosers would be classified as a "bad" movie. The acting is not particularly the best (featuring Smith's daughter Harley Quinn Smith and Johnny Depp's daughter Lily-Rose Depp as the leads), the story is ludicrous, the VFX isn't even finished by the looks of it, many of the jokes feel forced, the editing is all over the place among other things.
But you know what? The film is fun and by the end of my stay at the Canadian convenience store Eh-2-Zed (and the weird shenanigans that happen inside), I had an unexpected, enjoyable ride. Shot by James Laxton (who worked with Smith on 2014s Tusk-which was the first of The True North Trilogy with Yoga Hosiers as the second chapter and will conclude with Moose Jaws), the film has a nice, cinematic look to it.
There are times when the story hits a bump but when Smith goes full crazy weird, which happens quite a lot throughout the film, it makes up for some of the lackluster material. Scenes can get annoying, the dialogue isn't particularly clever (but will stick with you) and the story is about half cooked but at the end the day Yoga Hosers isn't the complete disaster that it would appear to be.
