Review of Yi Yi (2000) by Adam S — 21 Jun 2007
One of the best movies I've ever seen. I can't really compare it to any other film, either for its treatment of life, love, and death, or for its unobtrusive examination of scores of unique characters without ever losing one in the background.
Ozu comes close, similarly grounding his films in the minutiae of day-to-day life. Yi Yi goes much further, though, in rounding out the many characters in their world, transcending the cultural barriers to make the whole experience universal and deeply moving.
