Review of Yi Yi (2000) by Jeffrey C — 07 May 2009
One of the more compelling things about this movie is the use of the camera. We as the audience are constantly made to feel like another person in the house seeing characters move in and out of frame, catching snippets of dialogue, as they continue their life out of shot.
But in some ways this was also a major flaw. The lack of artifice creates a sense of normality, to the point where we no longer can be bothered watching. After all we came to see a movie and not life, if we want life we can look out the window.
But having said that, the plot is interesting, and the developments that take place in the lives of these characters give pause for retrospection. It is exceptionally well acted, and its only real flaw is that it is too real.
