A collage of life. Issues of birth, puberty, maturity, death, love, betrayal, hate lust, curiosity, hypocrisy echo throughout the movie.

On the title of the movie - "Yi Yi". Why are we afraid of new things? Any day in our lives must be unique, the next day could never be exactly the same as today or yesterday. We routinely engage ourselves into the everyday routines, however, the routines could never be identical. That's why it's but not . So how could we ever tired of new things and unknown?

Towards the end of the movie, YangYang told grandma that he wanted to tell people what they don't know for a living. "How fun would that be!" he said. Every day in live is not a second but always the first because each day we learn something new. We should always always be the better versions of our yesterday's selves. That's why YangYang wanted to be able to tell his younger nephew that "I become older/I am growing." (whichever translation suits you).

There is also a line that was being said again and again in the movie, that is "things are less complicated than they seem". People prefer magics and tricks: shortcuts, things that yield instant happiness and returns, using ends to justify their means. However, magicians are deceptive and what they produce must be unreal and short-lived. Pursuing magic must then be a complicated quest, because it is just impossible. There is no trick.
