Review of Yi Yi (2000) by Harrison H — 14 Jun 2010
I simple story, about nothing other than the regular events that follow with the passing of the days. Here however, Yang finds the poetry and wisdom inherent in everyday life. Beauty is everywhere, in the mundane urban environments of Taipei and a grandmother's making of origami animals.
When one of the younger characters is asked why he has taken a picture of the back of his uncle's head, he replies: "you can't see it, so I help you." It is perhaps that phrase that sums up Yang's work, a demonstration of all the parts of life we never get to see.
