Review of Yi Yi (2000) by Zack M — 31 Dec 2010
I hate to rate this film so high because Taiwan cinema has this way of making really static films that are long and boring, no wonder they killed their own cinema.
Though boring and wrought with a style that lets symbolic meaning of the narrative control the style of the cinema (which is wrong when not contrasted by the narrative flair of your story), the film somehow becomes appealing after 2 hours. Maybe by this point you are used to the characters and story enough to accept and enjoy how things will play out. There is nothing complicated about this story, it is simple and easy to relate. Points made by the director are accurate, simple, and edifying. A low key charm exists within the wall of this film, and it takes 2 hours to delve into it. Once their, your mind and spirit are harmonized with Yi Yi's world and Yang's message. This is why it is a good film. Patience is rewarding.
