Review of Yesterday (2019) by Sa_L_T — 01 Aug 2019

This film isn't insulting to the audience, it's not full to the brim with bad acting and it's not bastardised with poorly timed jokes which barely land. It's not an objectively 'bad' film - it's just incredibly boring and is laced with equally boring, overused, idiotic tropes.

I can see why others might've enjoyed the film, hell, I watched it with 2 friends who liked it. But I find that nitpickers and overthinkers, like myself, easily find themselves asking questions such as: "Why is there only 3 people who remember The Beatles and do they have any significance?", "How alien, unrealistic and trope-heavy could that love interest get?", and "How the ever-loving **** did they get that yellow submarine?".

I found the main character to be boring and with no proper, specific characteristics; the side characters unnecessary and annoying; and the antagonist to be childish and pertaining to a caricature (though this was likely intended to be a well-deserved jab at the buisnessmen behind the music industry).

The scene near the end of the film when the love interest drops her back-up love interest for her main love interest so that the protagonist could have a 'satisfying' conclusion to the b-plot is nothing short of confusing and completely unrealistic, Jesus that was a mouthful.

Anyway yeah, it was pretty **** would never watch again but I'm happy I got to be mad over something.

(Ok last thing but there was no reason for the film to be called 'Yesterday' - to make that decision more concrete they should've made the protagonist play it during his final concert, and perhaps instead of Wonderwall during his flashback - that would've made the film feel more intact and cohesive, whilst giving a reason (although weak) as to why The Beatles was the specific band to be 'forgotten': because it's directly special to him).
