Review of Yes Man (2008) by Andrew S — 25 Nov 2012
Having always been dismissive of my good friends subtle but persistent requests to get myself registered with flixster and pen a review I finally decided to bite the bullet this weekend and hence settled down to watch the 2008 movie Yes Man.
Therefore how ironic it should be that I find the plot of said film revolves around Carl, a chap who's life is going nowhere owing to his ever dismissive and reclusive attitude towards his friends. This guy was missing out on life and if im being honest at times it was slightly unnerving to watch given I could see elements of my own persona reflected within the lead character culminating in cold shiver down the spine moment when he, like myself, announced he had never even tried a redbull. However his life takes a dramatic change following an unexpected encounter with an old acquaintance which leads to him reluctantly but whole-heartedly adopting a covenant which prescribes that he say yes to everything that life throws at him.
Carl's transformation from a 'No Man' to a' Yes Man' immediately plunges him feet first into a range of extreme life experiences through which develop a number of heartwarming friendships and romances between the main characters. Don't get me wrong the movie does have its moments of violence and high speed driving coupled with a bit of tongue in cheek blue action (excuse the pun) leading to its 12 certification but I doubt these scenes would satisfy the appetite of the more extreme adrenaline junky viewer. However the real key to the success of this film lies with Carrey's trademark rubber faced portrayal of Carl which provides laugh out loud moments of hilarity throughout.
As one would expect all does not run smoothly with the covenant and ultimately the realisation dawns on Carl that whilst being open to all life has to offer is important the real key to success lies in being able to weigh up the options and get the balance right.
So what the heck mines a vodka and red bull - but best not make it a double...
