Review of Yes, Madam! (1985) by Lauren O — 06 Jul 2009
Three Stars out of Four.
When it is hot outside, you have a drink in hand, a comfy sofa beckoning you, you don't want to see story, character, structure; some days you want to see: shooting, fast, unrealistic martial arts, cheesy dubbed-over dialogue as flat as a pancake and chicks slapping each others hands and kicking ass. Yesterday I didn't feel like an in-depth art movie studying the degradation of Macbeth, I wanted to see roundhouse kicks and punches, I wanted action. Police Assassins (aka Yes Madam) is basically a vehicle for the above action packed fight scenes. No CGI action like the terrible Fast & Furious and Transformers 2 just flamboyant choreography between the superb and beautiful (as ever) Michelle Yeoh, who distils like wine every time she makes a film. She isn?t even a martial artist, she could have fooled me! Cynthia Rothrock also plays a bitch of a policewoman who happens to be a master of kung fu; the two have literally no chemistry, Michelle Yeoh is likeable and Cynthia isn?t. Their characters don?t like each other in the film, but by the end they are the best of friends... Ignoring major plot holes in a plot as thin as this (I think it has something to do with a microfilm) seriously don?t see it as a film as much as a action scene from a better film. Just. Watch. It.
