Review of Yentl (1983) by Asif K — 02 Sep 2011
A surprisingly subpar film. I think the failings are all a direct result of Barbra Streisand's own ego. While she is undeniably talented and makes the movie watchable, it is also clear that she has no idea how to direct a solid film.
The film, rather than driving forward sort of puttering along without clearly setting up its conflicts, much less resolving them. It seems like Streisand just saw a social issue she wanted to tackle, and while she certainly asked a tough, although dated, question, It seems she forgot to answer it.
