Review of Yentl (1983) by Michel X — 29 Mar 2010
Although it was well done in some ways - I was surprised to find out it was halfway to being a musical - I just can't give this film a higher rating. The basic premise is a good one and at the start it looks like the story has great potential, but (without giving anything away) about halfway through the plot takes a turn that besides being utterly implausible also makes the otherwise sympathetically-portrayed main character look unbelievably selfish.
After that I just couldn't take anything seriously. On the positive side, thumbs up for the decent acting and for the positive portrayal of rabbinical culture.
