Review of Yellow Submarine (1968) by Matt W — 01 Feb 2010
Wow!
What a crazy, hilarious, trippy, amazing, stunning, musical adventure through the world of The Beatles. Oh, man, this movie - I just adore it, haha.
First off, it's visually stunning. To think that this movie was made in 1968 (hand drawn, I believe) is an outstanding thought. It's so much fun to look at and just take in... breath-taking.
Of course, I have to comment on the music! You simply cannot go wrong with an all-Beatles soundtrack. Such classics as 'Eleanor Rigby,' 'Nowhere Man,' 'Sgt. Pepper's,'and MY favorite, 'All You Need is Love,' among several others. Not only were the actual song segments great, the soundtrack of the movie was perfect, as well. So well done.
Now, let's not forget the Beatles themselves! Obviously, they were not shooting for some sort of Oscar, but their performances (as voice actors) was quite the undertaking for them, I'd imagine. I don't think all four Beatles played themselves all the time, but I'm sure all four took part in it at some point. Made me laugh a lot, regardless.
The ending segment of 'All Together Now' with the actual Beatles was so good, too. Such a fun movie!
The story was outrageously silly, but I think that's why I liked it. I especially loved when John tried to explain the theory of relativity.
The only reasons I do not give it 5 stars is because, for one, I'd hoped there would be a lot more Beatles music in it. You end up with about 10 songs in a 90-minute movies. Not bad, but there were some songs clearly alluded to I wish they'd done (Fixing a Hole, for one).
Then, there's a scene where they're infiltrating the Blue Meanie's headquarters or something - that scene was kind of bland, without music, but it only lasted five or so minutes, so it's forgivable.
All in all, this is one trippy movie to watch. If you're not too big on the Beatles, you probably won't enjoy it as much as someone who loves the Beatles (like myself).
All you need is love! And this movie's got plenty of it. 4/5.
