Review of Yellow Submarine (1968) by Steven P — 13 Jul 2010
Brimming with visual counterculture and some of the best songs of the Fab Four, The Beatles Yellow Submarine is very much the 2001: A Space Odyssey of animated films.
Predating MTV by nearly two decades, Yellow Submarine, along with every Beatles film from A Hard Day's Night to Let it Be set the stage for what the music video can do. We would probably not have Gnarls Barkley's watercolor-driven video of his song "Crazy" if it weren't for all the flowing, LSD-colored landscapes and characters in this film.
This film started my Beatles obsession, and I will be anxiously awaiting Robert Zemeckis' Polar Express-style makeover of this film in Christmas 2012.
