Review of Year of the Dog (2007) by Alexavier R — 13 Feb 2008
I wanted to like this movie a lot more then I did but it is still a likeable and funny, dark comedy. The movie has the best of intentions and Mike White crafts one of his better screenplays. The movie has a tendency to veer off course a little too far, especially in some of the situations in the last 20 minutes.
Still the movie has great performances including a winning one by Molly Shannon, that proves she can carry a movie on her own. Peter Sarsgaard is also very good as an animal trainer though I wish his character wouldn't have been pushed aside so quickly.
White's direction, this is his first film as director, is maybe a little too simple and the film could have benefited from a better asthetic quality. Still the film relies on its strengths, it's screenplay and acting, and boht deliver.
It may veer off course in spots but it is still a honest and funny indie comedy.
