Review of Year of the Dog (2007) by Brent B — 29 Jun 2008
What ends up being an anthem for PETA-lovers is unsure of itself as it darts between a comedy of species misfits and a neurotic thriller that veers closer and closer to 'American Splendor.' Throughout the course of the movie we watch Molly Shannon's Peggy Spade spiral madly from socially awkward middle-aged spinster to vehement animal rights activist. But, the transformation is marked with sunshine and plucky soundtrack, so you're not supposed to notice when things start getting kind of weird.
Blatant and ridiculous mischaracterizations of anyone who doesn't happen to be as far on the tree-hugging side of the fence as Peggy Spade are surprising and insulting. A shockingly off-putting project from Mike White.
