Review of Y Tu Mamá También (2001) by Jay D — 21 Feb 2015
Y Tu Mama Tambien? (With Your Mother Too!) is a weird cocktail of genres that are impossible to mix. It is a coming-of-age and erotic road trip with deep political undertones. Hats Off to Cuaron brothers (Alfonso & Carlos) for mixing seemingly distant genres like road trip and erotica & coming-of-age and politics.
Film was the highest grossing Mexican film of 2001 when it was released and earned unanimous praise for 3 leads - Maribel Verdu (Luisia), Gael Garcia Bernel (Julio) & Diego Luna (Tenoch). But what really is brilliant in the film is Emmanuel Lubezki's fluid cinematography with ample of long uncut shots specially the "Climatic Dinner Table Scene" and Alfonso's innovative use of third person voice over for moving the narrative.
If you love films that have road trips, are coming-of-age, has political undertones and are filled with raunchy scenes do watch this brilliant little gem.
