Review of Y Tu Mamá También (2001) by Joe C — 22 Aug 2015
Stars Gael Bernal and Diego Luna are best friends in real life, and it shows over the course of this beautifully shot road movie that broke Mexican box office records. As two friends who convince the attractive wife of a relative to journey with them to a beach called 'Heaven's Mouth' - which, unfortunately, doesn't exist - the two are all Heaven's mouth pompous stories of their escapades.
Their cocksure machismo is intriguing to watch, knowing underneath that their complete lack of experience is about to appear through the cracks, bouncing off the gorgeous and more mature Verdu. With all the natural performances, uncensored content and unbroken camera shots writer/director Alfonso Cuaron go to build his successful career off of, Y Tu Mama Tambian is highly oversexed, sometimes uncomfortably so, and is a grown-up coming-of-age tale whose take on what it is to be a man will stay with you for a good long while.
