Review of XXY (2007) by Mike M — 24 May 2008
The hero(ine)'s predicament opens up a bigger can of worms than the film can really handle. A certain narrative opacity creeps in - we'll call it the Lucretia Martel effect - and you may even have cause to notice how events are founded on one almighty contrivance: how many Argentinian surgeons do you know that are prepared to do housecalls? With their family? That last a week?.
.. It's promising, but you should have come out wrestling with issues of sexual identity; instead, we leave questioning some of Puenzo's plotting.
