Review of xXx (2002) by Vincent T — 15 Jun 2015
Fresh off of the success of "Fast and the Furious" director Rob Cohen and star Vin Diesel re-teamed for this silly bit of Americanized, pumped up, rock and roll, James Bond-wannabe escapism. I remember quite liking this in the day, but now I find it rather obnoxious.
There are the James Bond topes with a ski chase, a femme fetal, a secret agent gadget creator, a stand alone opening action scene, etc. Diesel is quite charismatic and the action is well shot, but the script and story are at best wildly derivative and at worst completely annoying (i.
E. Xander Cage pandering to the 12 year olds in the audience by stealing the car from an anti-video game politician, skydiving with a snowboard, a stupid super-boat chase scene that seems like it was taken from "Condorman," Xander's dumb big fur coat, rail siding on a briefcase, and dumb dialogue like "You're in the Xander Zone.
" or "I'm coming in hot with a side of bacon."). But back on the plus side, Asia Argento is quite good as the Bond Girl figure and I was hoping this would raiser her profile and get her into more American films, but sadly it did not.
