Review of Xanadu (1980) by ~Northeastjuliet~ — 25 Jun 2011
This movie desperately needs to be cut a little slack.
While originally pegged as the next 'Saturday Night Fever' in adverts (which is peculiar considering that movie wasn't even close to a musical, nobody sang far as I recall) It was expected by those involved to reach that kind of wild popularity, as well, save the (then) crumbling Pan-Pacific Auditorium.
Thousands of dollars lost later and the once grand auditorium having burnt to the ground, it's safe to say it didn't come close to anyones expectations.
If you're a child of the late 70's, early 80's however, you'll find the movie somewhat charming, and a smile or two will be inspired by the catchy musical numbers ('Don't walk away' & 'Dancin' in particular come to mind).
This movie can be pegged with animator Don Bluths first big screen project as having animated the 'Don't walk away' segment. So if for nothing else, I'd watch it for that.
Fast forward over the grand bandstand portions, as well the 'Party all over the world' number, and perhaps the cheesy, exaggeratedly dolled up muses dancing about and I think you'll enjoy this movie just fine.
