Review of X+Y (2014) by Lovro H — 18 Sep 2015
X Plus Y AKA A Brilliant Young Mind is a brilliant movie! The movie centers around a very clever boy who was diagnosed with autism at a very young age. His father died in a car accident (with the boy in the car), and his mother was left alone with him.
You can already tell this is going to be a very emotional film. His mother wants the best for him, so she arranges private math classes with a professor in a high school to train the boy for the maths olympics.
That's about all I'm gonna say about the story. Yes, it may sound quite cheesy and tearjerking, but it's actually amazing. Asa Butterfield is amazing as the main character! His acting was brilliant! All the actors were brilliant! A lot of the characters are likeable, and even some who aren't very likeable at first turn out to be quite likeable in the end (and vice versa).
There are many emotional scenes throughout the movie, but they never feel over the top. The movie looks fantastic. The directing is great, and I love it when they show how our main character sees the world.
Also, speaking of the main character, he is very relatable (at least to me). The way he talks, the way he interacts with other people and the things he likes, all reminded me somewhat of me and I could relate to him.
The soundtrack is great. All in all, this is one of my favourite movies of the year and I would deffinetely recommend checking it out!
