Review of X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (1963) by Talon B — 20 Jun 2008
Playing out like a story from E.C. Comics, X has enough weird plot-twists to distract from the dated visual effects and strange enough characters to keep the unexpected coming. Ray Milland, a master of intense underplay, gives a spooky performance while the others in the cast--including Twilight Zone regulars and a zinger-free Don Rickles--maintain an edginess that slowly builds to it's uncomfortable and abrupt finale.
Had Corman paced it a bit faster and the effects been just a little more inventive, it could've delivered even colder chills of dread and fright. Still, as far as midnight movies go, it doesn't get much better and legitimately eerier than this.
