Review of X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) by Kyle S — 07 Apr 2014
I wanted to love this film so much because i've been longing for another great X-Men film since X2, and while it is a step in the right direction, I felt that this could have been so much better. First of all, it's much better than X-Men 3, so just forget that film ever came out! The premise is great and Hugh Jackman is truly Wolverine throughout the film and embodies the tortured hero from the comics.
There are also a lot of new mutants to meet including some fan favourites like Blob, Gambit, Deadpool and Emma Frost, but their appearances are short-lived and it feels like they were shown quickly to please fans and then dismissed just as quickly.
The pacing of the film is great at the start but I felt that nearer the end, the story seemed to rush and some major plot points were only briefly mentioned. The action sequences are fantastic and well done.
Overall, Gavin Hood has made a great origin story with some clever nods to the comics (so I'm told, I couldn't find them) but he's still not a patch on Bryan Singer. Bring Singer back for the sequel and flesh out mutants like Gambit and we'll have the next 5 star X-Men film.
