Review of X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) by Mitchell Z — 21 Feb 2015
X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says, but its nowhere near where it should've been. Wolverine has one of the most interesting backstories in comics and it is generally wasted here in this 107 minute film that seems to have bottled up a lot of the rage of the character.
When you have an actor like Jackman, who not only loves the character but is perfect for it, you have to give him freedom with it, and you get the sense that he's held back here. Origins wanted to please fans by giving them fan-favorite characters like Deadpool and Gambit, both casted well with Ryan Reynolds and Taylor Kitsch, but they're just there and serve no purpose but to please fans.
Liev Shreiber and Danny Huston are both very good in their roles, but Origins fails to give us the truly dark, bloody, and tragic backstory of Logan that we wanted and deserved.
