Review of X-Men: First Class (2011) by Mike S — 15 Oct 2013
This SF action film does a reasonable job of showing us the origins of the X-Men, seen already in several earlier films. But as charming as he is, James McAvoy is not Patrick Stewart and his portrayal of X-Men founder Charles Xavier is too "young-laddish" for my taste.
Michael Fassbender does a better job as a younger version of Ian MacKellan's Magneto character, although the character's inability to get past his childhood trauma smacks too much of comic-book plotting.
My disbelief failed to remain suspended when the X-Men intervened in the Cuban Missile Crisis and the climax ultimately felt anti-climactic. It's a competent film, but not spectacular.
