Review of X-Men: First Class (2011) by Fani C — 08 May 2014
What with the latest X-men installment fast approaching, I thought I better check out this original. Whilst not a huge lover of Marvel adventures, 'First Class' did a good job of depicting the very origins of the X-men, with each of the well known characters appearing in their youth. This was perhaps what made the film most enjoyable, as it prevented a reliance on pure action, and instead was able to build our characters from nobody's. Despite not being a big fan of James McAvoy, I was impressed with his performance as Xavier as he demonstrated his keen desire to establish peace whenever possible. This is distinguishable from Eric (Magneto), who is hell bent upon revenge and a dislike towards just about everyone since the death of his mother. These scenes featuring these two are well enacted, with a powerful (yet inevitable) finale. It is also worth noting that it was nice not to see Wolverine dominating the screen as he seems to in all of the other X-men films...
Despite not having any major flaws (apart from a relatively weak villain), this Marvel example didn't overwhelm me, and so can be considered alongside other 'okay' adventures such as Captain America.
