I think it's pretty fair to say that the current glut of super-hero movies can all be traced back to the success of the original X-Men film.

That (original) film was quite enjoyable, with X2 managing to improve upon it even further, before the two-timed mis-steps of X3: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Thankfully, I felt that this film (set in an earlier era) manages to redress most of that imbalance (even if Hugh Jackman only gets a single cameo).

For its background, this is set in and around the Cuban missile crisis, and really tells the story of the early friendship between Magneto and Professor X, with the opening scene of this film (in the Nazi camps) lifted directly from Bryan Singer's original to tie the two series's together. While the film is not perfect, it's a distinct improvement upon the last two.
