Review of X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) by Shane H — 22 Mar 2016
The first movie in the X-Men movie series that feels like it really delivers on the full scope that the source material promises. The best thing about this continuity crossover, however, is how it continues what made the first couple of films a success; how it manages to combine both the bigger-than-ever scale of the time travel, superhero, sci-fi premise and the smaller scale of personal conflicts.
Time and again it resists the urge to break out and be bombastic and instead brings things in and plays it intimate; and when does come to action it tends to be very cleverly done. Yes, a lot of what happens doesn't stand up to closer scrutiny, but that's always a problem with time travel movies, and during its run-time it keeps up the pace and provides enough reasons to be engrossed that you don't have time to care.
