Review of X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) by Johnathon W — 19 Apr 2016
First rate entry into the X-films that, combined with "First Class", successfully reboots the franchise back on solid footing. The cast, both old & new, easily slip back into their roles like a glove but the real star is director Bryan Singer.
He returns to the series like he never left, nailing every character (even those with brief appearances stay true to the source material) while crafting a story that manages to stay true to comics & past movies (even the bad ones).
By the end, thanks to the miracle of time travel (a device that doesn't follow science but adheres to the rules set in the movie), it erases those bad ones as well (something "Terminator: Genesys" should have learned from).
The only grips are the lack of a compelling villain (no fault to Peter Dinklage, whose natural intelligence & charisma shines with each appearance) and a few character connections from the comics that would have added to the drama (one connection with Mystique & a future X-Men would have been great).
Overall, this is the best comic book movie since "The Avengers" and further proof (along with "Deadpool") that Fox should keep the license from Marvel a little bit longer.
