Review of X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) by Ken S — 01 Feb 2015
Bryan Singer makes quite the triumphant return to the X-Men series, making a solid summer action movie that doesn't feel like endless action scenes are bogged down by too much CGI. This probably boasts the best effects in any X-Men film, and like "First Class" I felt it handled the character balance well.
I didn't feel lost like I had with previous X-Men movies as to who everyone was and what their powers were. The plot is easy to follow despite time travel stuff, and the plot feels streamlined and well thought out, in spite of the fact that it deals with characters in the past and in the future.
I've always had issues with this franchise...the first film was fun when I first saw it, but it hasn't held up for me. The sequels never did it for me, but I did enjoy "First Class".
..and this film does a good job of building on from that film while Singer takes the time to try and undo what Brett Ratner had done in taking over for him with the third film...and he manages to unify both the "First Class" movie with his own original film, undo a bunch of terrible stuff, and make a really satisfying movie in the process.
I'm really surprised that this film works as well as it did, but it kind of sold me on seeing future "X-Men" movies.
