The Breakdown:
Story: 3.5/5.
Strengths:
Pacing is fantastic.(Which can easily be a problem when involving so many characters.).
Great humor seasoned throughout.
Call backs to the previous films. Makes for a great bookend to this story arc.
Characters minus a few of the villains are handled extremely well.
Weaknesses:
Apocalypse and Psylocke under developed.
Quicksilver’s moment to shine tries too hard to out due his debut.
Moira (Rose Byrne) feel’s like a 5th wheel in the final act.
Characters: 4/5.
Strengths:
Michael Fassbender continues to shine as Magneto.
Josh Helm (Stryker) and Tye Sheridan (Cyclops) embody the performances of their predecessors.
Kodi Smit-MchPhee great take on Nightcrawler.
Weaknesses:
The Pentagon Generals were very non-believable.
Visuals: 3/5.
Strengths:
Nod to the 90’s cartoon series uniforms.
Weaknesses:
The special effects are very average and not polished.
There are multiple scenes that scream “we’re standing in front of a green screen”.
CGI moments that feel like they were done for television instead of a big budget summer film.
Apocalypse makeup and costume distract Oscar Isaac's performance.
Bottom Line: 3.5/5.
"X-Men Apocalypse" is a worthy edition to the franchise. The overall story and performances make up for the disappointing special effects. Oscar Isaac did what he could with Apocalypse but given more screen time and a better visual look he could have been an amazing villain. I look forward to what they do with the next outing with the Second Class of X-Men.
There is a post credit scene.
