A one-dimensional villain with a poorly constructed motivation for destroying the world is able to attract superheroes and villains to his side for unconvincing reasons. In your face, unrealistic CGI effects litter the movie and make it difficult to genuinely care about the characters or experience high stakes.

Formulaic storytelling means you can see what's about to happen a few seconds ahead of time, minimizing any hope for the impact of surprise. Apocalypse's caked-on makeup is distracting and illusion-breaking.

This movie proves, yet again, Marvel films belong with Marvel Studios. Bryan Singer's latest rendition recalls to mind the first trilogy and that was the first clue that we were in for a disappointing ride.

At least the story was easier to follow than Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
