Review of X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) by Simon T — 06 Feb 2017
This script was a bit messy, but not nearly the disaster some people seem to think it was. Expectations were really high after DOFP and this didn't live up to them - it turned out to be just a run-of-the mill superhero movie.
The origin stories for Storm/Nightcrawler and the other younger versions of the X-Men were really well done and well cast. Angel was a misfire for me, as they did a much more accurate portrayal of Warren in X3, and Jennifer Lawrence phoned this performance in big time. I'd be shocked if she came back, judging by her lack of enthusiasm in this.
It's a good popcorn movie. Much better than Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, X3 and Wolverine, but not as good as early Iron Man, Cap2, GOTG, XMFC, X2, DOFP or Antman. You'll have a good time watching it, but - other than the Quicksilver scenes - don't expect to have your mind blown.
