Review of Wyatt Earp (1994) by Nigel M — 12 Sep 2008
Despite being a Costner fan I'd never really caught this film in its entirety instead I favoured the Tombstone film with Russell and an excellent Val Kilmer (Doc Holliday). I'd heard criticism of this film as being slow and not as good as the other film but now having seen it it's obvious that this is a superior work detailing pretty much all of Earp's life and how through the loss of his young bride had led him to be so outwardly cold to others.
That said he had a massive bond with his brothers who came first over any woman. Dennis Quaid who can be infuriatingly poor (IMHO) is very good as Doc (though still not as good as Kilmer) and I liked particularly the performance of Madsen as Virgil.
Epic it is but then a life like Earp's and his family can't be covered in 100mins. Good stuff.
