Review of Wyatt Earp (1994) by Dustin G — 28 May 2009
Epics can be good and bad. Good in their sheer size and the giant canvas they encompass. And bad if the director is overindulgent and fools himself into thinking that a 3+ hour movie he may find interesting will automatically interest the moviegoing public.
Stanley Kubrick, Mel Gibson, Victor Fleming, of course David Lean, are all known for their epic movies that movie lovers loved also. Lawrence Kasdan, not known for his epics, I would say this is his only one. But this movie is fantastic and breathtaking, telling the story (quite accurately) of a man's life, a real man that became one of the poineering symbols of the west at the turn of the century. Kevin Costner is great, as are all the supporting players. I love the story and the way its told. I don't know, overall, this an amazing story, well told and filmed and acted. Highly recommended, especially if you dig westerns.
