Review of Wuthering Heights (2011) by Ryan B — 16 Oct 2012
What an amazing work of cinema. I am not a fan of period costume dramas but it is clear that neither is director Andrea Arnold. What she has created in this adaptation is nothing short of astonishing, a beautiful evocation of love, revenge, and the internal struggle for self determination.
The cinematography is unlike anything I've ever seen and while I am not familiar with the book, I became immersed in this world almost immediately. This is not a stuffy, British chamber piece; this is gritty, raw, poetic cinema in the vain of Terrance Malick and Bela Tarr.
One of the year's best.
