Review of Wuthering Heights (2011) by Patrick M — 23 Apr 2013
This version was unrealistic. Heathcliff could not have been black and had all that was supposed to happen unfold in this plot. The complexity of Heathcliff and Cathy's relationship was that they were perfect for each other except for his family circumstances.
Hindley would not have felt treated by Heathcliff unless he was white. In that era, a black man could not own land (he bought the property from Hindley), and he made his fortunes in America. A black man (free or not) could not book passage or make a living in America either.
This tid bit was left ambiguous in this movie. To have a black Heathcliff, the era of the movie's setting would have needed to be changed too. Also, the times that the characters were hanging dogs by their collars was just in bad taste.
The lighting and camera jumping around all the time made it a difficult movie to watch. If I wasn't so interested to see how they would going to handle a black man accomplishing all Heathcliff does, I would have stopped watching in within five minutes.
The realism was completely crushed. They should have added talking animals or time travel to increase the realistic aspect of this movie.
