Review of Wuthering Heights (1992) by Ruben M — 30 Nov 2008
Wuthering Heights is a passionate if muddled adaptation of Brontëâ??s timeless novel. Characters cannot be cared for and are easily forgotten; moreover, so many die, yet so little screen time is spared for them that one wonders why they were even included in the film.
Lockwoodâ??s presence, if anything, confuses the viewer more than helps with the progression and enjoyment of the story. Finally, itâ??s difficult to appreciate Binoche with such a thick French accent and a painful lack of emotion and liveliness.
Nonetheless, the film manages to tell a dense story in under two hours, without losing its audience entirely and keeping a faithful mood in regard to the novel â?? a feat worthy of some praise when compared to the butchering on film of other classic works.
It most certainly can still be improved upon.
